Roots Of Influence: Judy Rees

Roots Of Influence: Nourishing Underground Skills For Agents Of Change How can you engage your colleagues’ and clients’ minds - and get them working better together with you? You’re probably already familiar with Agile values and practices, and using many of them. And, there’s one more critical element you should understand and develop. It’s a hidden “how to” piece for influencing people, especially in collaborative work teams. And like the foundations of a building or the roots of a tree, you ignore it at your peril! Foundations sustain the building: tree roots are vital to growth. In the same way, the skills of paying attention and directing attention support and nourish influential, collaborative communication. It’s a truism that thoughts become words, words turn into actions, actions make habits, habits make character, and character becomes destiny... but what comes ahead of that sequence? Nancy Kline’s quote captures that critical first step: “The quality of your attention determines the quality of another person’s thoughts.” Paying attention and directing attention are critical change-agent skills, essential tools for influencers. In this workshop you’ll learn how to increase the quality of your own attention, and to direct other people’s attention with precision. You’ll learn how to use this insight to improve communication between diverse individuals, even when exploring “unknown unknowns” in complex contexts. Even here, it strengthens relationships, increases transparency and encourages clarity. In this one-day workshop, you’ll: Try out “the nearest thing FBI negotiators have to a Jedi mind trick” (as described by the FBI’s lead hostage negotiator) Discover precision processes to focus your own and other people’s attention on what really matters, reducing distractions and time-wasting Experience the impact of questions on emotions, and learn how to use that to advantage See how you can build stronger relationships within and beyond the team by discovering, sharing and enjoying hidden aspects of people’s thinking Learn to exploit the Persuasion Paradox to develop win-win solutions to longstanding problems Make an action plan to create a system where feedback, learning and development are inevitable.
